The bombs used to attack the Boston Marathon appear to have been homemade improvised explosive devices (IEDs) made from components easily available in chain big box stores. The Department of Homeland Security warned in 2010 about the devices finding their way to the U.S. after seeing them used in insurgencies in Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan.
