Book Club for Broken Knees - The Financial Lives of The Poets by Jess Walter. I liked Beautiful Ruins so much I decided to hack away at Walter's bibliography. About halfway through this one - a complete 180 from Ruins in terms of structure, tone, characters, themes. Either this is a lesser work, or he is really showing off his versatility as a writer.

Set between a quiet, pastoral seaside town in Italy, the hustle of Los Angeles, and the pre-grunge era of Seattle, Beautiful Ruins stages around the cinematic bomb of the 1967 production of Cleopatra. While the film is famous for costing an arm and a leg and resulting in marital drama between Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, Beautiful Ruins creeps out into the lives affected by their relationship, sometimes impacting individuals 50 years down the line. Clair is a production assistant who finds herself chained to aging, floundering, yet legendary Hollywood producer Michael Deane, who in turn is chained to a studio that promises to gouge every credit and dollar for any project he works on. Pat is an aging rock and roller, recovering from decades of addiction and trying to make some career out of his notoriety later in life. Dee Moray, victim of the fallout of the Taylor/Burton affair finds herself in a sleepy sea-side hotel awaiting the fate of her future where she meets Pasquale - the inn's owner - and Alvis - the inn's resident novelist/dreamer. Beautiful Ruins follows the weave of these souls from the day Dee Moray finds herself a resident of the Hotel of Adequate Views in 1962 to when she is finally reunited with her entire history nearly 50 years later. The whole while we see the all-too-familiar anguish of what happens when someone tries to pursue their dream of being an artist, and how money and politics always seem to get in the way. I loved this book, definitely one of the best I've read in years. While it is the first Jess Walter book I've encountered, it certainly won't be the last as the literary lyricism and total, raw engagement with the characters leaves you up all night wondering what happens next.
